Whiteout

Sometimes people just meant to meet...

Chapter 1

"All units return to station, there is an incoming blizzard that is set to cut services," said the voice from the radio.

Hunter groaned, he was far from the station, the blizzards around these parts sometimes hit with ferious intensity and little warning. He quickly turned the car around and hoped to make the forty minute trip before the blizzard cut off visibility and he wouldn't be able to see anything in front of him.

Ten minutes later he knew he wasn't going to make it, the wind and the snow had picked up quickly the night was already cold, but the chill fogging the windows showed him just how much colder it had become outside. He hoped to find some place that he could ride out the storm in, his car was not practical.

Even though it was one of the station's few four wheel drive patrol units, this amount of snow would soon make the road too hazardous to continue on. Red lights gleamed out in front of him, he slowed his pace further as the lights gleamed like red halos. It was a car, the wheels were lodged in the already deepening snow as the howling wind dumped large curtains of snow down in front of them.

He slowed to a stop and adjusted his thermal gloves and parka hood and stepped out. He grimaced at the biting slash of cold as he shut the door. He walked through the powdery snow that seemed to just sink under his boots. He reached the car and knocked on the window.

He shouted out, hoping to be heard over the howling wind, "Are you ok in there?"

Helena was pissed, her stupid powers were screwing up again. She really hated being a chaos demon, and she also really hated the cold. Even though it wasn't going to physically hurt her, it still sucked.

She was stuck here for now, she had hoped to get back to her apartment and make the journey back underneath but her stupid powers screwed up and spawned a monster blizzard. The thought of having to walk several hours in the freezing blizzard pissed her off. A loud thudding knock echoed from her window as a muffled voice called out. Lucky for her she had better then mortal hearing and could pick it up.

Maybe now she'd make it home, she tugged her gloves on tighter and pulled the door open and then stepped out and walked around to the other side. Even with her enhanced eyesight, it was difficult to make out the dark form of the man standing there. "No, my stupid car is stuck, blizzard came out of nowhere."

Hunter walked up to the lithe woman that had stepped out of the car and shouted to her, "These blizzards tend to do that around here, lets get you out of here." He motioned her to follow him.

Helena grinned and followed him, the bright beams from the headlights shining off him. She finally got to see who was rescuing her, he was a police officer. A damn fine one too from what she could see.

He opened the passenger door and gestured for her to get into the car, then he walked around to the other side of the car and opened the door and slipped back into his seat. Helena finally got a good look at the man who had rescued her from hours of cold torment. His short tawny brown hair had streaks of dark blonde running through it, ruffled from the hood of his parka that he had pushed back.

He tried to start the car again and cursed as the motor didn't even utter even a sound of distress. Helena thudded back into the chair with a sigh, her magnificently crappy powers strike again. Why couldn't she have gotten cooler powers? But it was just her luck her demon sire was a chaos demon.

Her former rescuer looked at her and said, "Sorry, doesn't look like we're going anywhere. I don't think we could have made much progress anyway." He pointed out the window to the sheer blanketing wall of whiteness. "Have you seen anything close by that we could use for shelter? This storm looks like its going to continue for quite sometimes. We'll end up buried in here if we don't find a better place."

Helena looked around carefully catching the faint glint of light off to the side of the road. "There is a place I know of around here, I don't know what it is exactly but I do know of a few buildings around here."

"Good, we're getting snowed in here, its best we moved now, do you know the direction?" he asked.

"Yes, lets go, its already starting to get chilly in here," said Helena as she secured her gloves again.

Hunter unclipped the radio from the the car and pulled his hood back on before stepping out of the car and shutting the door. The snow was coming down so fast and hard he could barely see Helena's outline. She came towards him slowly and grasped his hand and tugged him down the slight slope on the edge of the road.

They pushed through the snow as the wind battered against them, the howling too loud for them to speak. Bright shimmering halos appeared not far from them, soon they were up to a door. Grasping the handle Helena pushed it open and stepped inside a sudden warm blast of heat surrounded them.

"That blizzard out there is something fierce, you two are lucky that you got here when you did, I was about to lock up the doors, can't see squat out there. The internet just went down here, can't service so you won't be able to pay for the room until the service is restored so don't worry about anything until its time to leave," said the old man behind the counter. He looked at Helena with a subtle wink, he loved being a storm demon. And he had the perfect disguise, he would recognize Helena anywhere.

No doubt she thought she caused the storm he thought with an inward chuckle. She needed a strong man beside her to help her control of powers, her sire never did teach her proper control. He hung out a key to them and said, "Luckily Room 1 is free, its right next door so you shouldn't be getting lost in the snow."

"Thanks, the blizzard is certainly a killer, lucky we got stranded here," said Hunter as he grabbed the key.

He took Helena's hand and walked towards the back exit of the reception room and stepped out in the howling blizzard again. A weakening glow gleamed close by, the wind making it hard to walk as they pushed through it towards the cabin.

Tightly gripping the key Hunter slid the key against the lock until it slid in, he turned the lock until it clicked open. He pushed the door open and stepped in, the room surprisingly warm. He looked around and saw a fire crackling in the fireplace and a large pile of logs sitting against the wall nearby.

Helena shut the door, cutting out the cold and muffling the howl of the wind. "Very cosy in here, what might I call my rescuer?" she asked.

"Sergeant Hunter Barnet, but just Hunter is fine. What might I call you, lovely lady?" he asked with a smile.

"Helena Cervantes, but Helena is just fine," she said. 'Or Hel, like my friends call me,' she thought to herself with a grin.

He finally got his first good look at her as she took off her parka and walked towards the sofa and past him. The shimmering cascade of brown hair with shimmering streaks of auburn red, she had features and a body that would tempt a saint to sin. He snapped out of his daze as his radio crackled.

He picked it up and informed the station of his situation, he grimaced with dismay as a response came through shot with static. "The highway has been closed Sergeant, the weather forecast predicts the blizzard to last through the night. It's estimated you'll be there for two days, hopefully the room is stocked up because everything is going to be snowed out."

Hunter registered his response and then went to find Helena who had made herself comfortable on the sofa with a wine glass filled with a dark red wine. "I poured you a glass of wine too, so I hear, two days. I wonder what we can do with that time," she said with a grin.

For once the disaster that is her powers gave her something good, she had an excuse to not use her teleporting powers, can't around a human. And spending the time to explore this cop's delicious looking body would be an excellent treat. She licked her lips as he shead his coat revealing the hidden shape of his muscles. Getting him a little tipsy would help her planned seduction along a little.

"Yes, my commander just informed me that the highway is blocked and the plows will be unable to make it until sometime in the morning two days from now. He sat down next to her with the glass she had poured letting the warmth settle into his body.

  1. Life is like a river. Only we are floating away from this boat to another boat, but still in the river. So, we should accept change gladly. Nice article. I do agree with you.
